With a warm atmosphere that makes you feel you are eating at a neighbour's house, Valide is one of my favourite lunch stops in İstanbul. I took the same pleasure from both of the 2 visits I have made. The Valide chips, served with chimichurri and a ketchup they make themselves, are reason enough to stop by on their own. The Mediterranean salad, very fresh and generously loaded, is a light but filling start. The köfte in sour cherry sauce, one of the menu's signature plates, brings the faint sourness of the cherry together with the aromatic touch of anise and adds an original reading to the classic köfte. As someone who grew up in Bursa, I am picky about a good süt helvası. Their version here, light in build and exactly the right consistency, made me more than happy. To drink, the Arnold Palmer, half lemonade and half iced tea, makes a refreshing companion to the food, especially in the summer months.
