The Douro Valley is a region that enchants you in every detail. My wife and I celebrated our tenth anniversary here. More than half of the 250-plus grape varieties grown in Portugal are grown in this region. The hotel run jointly by the Torel Hotel Group and the Quinta da Vacaria vineyard is among the first places I would recommend with my eyes closed to anyone wanting to stay in the region. Although the hotel building is one of the oldest structures in the region, it managed to win a Michelin Key in only 18 months. Everything here has been thought through down to the finest detail; even the staircase down to the cellar is designed in the shape of a corkscrew. The hotel's food is not especially impressive, but when it comes to olive oil they have genuinely outdone themselves.

- Quinta da Vacaria 10 Years Old Tawny Port: Apple crumble & vanilla ice cream (I tried the 20 and 30 year old versions of this wine, and my favourite was the 20 year old.)
